OK folks, time for one of our more challenging rides of the year; our Saturday 400km brevet.
This ride departs at MIDNIGHT FRIDAY NIGHT from the Graham’s Grove in Dartmouth.
Link to the route is https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28916713
We will head out the Eastern Shore, with an early stop at the Porter’s Lake Tim Hortons for coffee, as this is the last spot for <anything> until the 100 mile mark. (Plan to carry some food as we’ll stop in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere to have a bite to eat and listen to the peepers.) We’ll continue on to Musquodoboit Harbour and up to Middle Musquodoboit, then we’ll turn off the 224 onto the Mooseland Road past the Moose River Gold District and the new gold mine there. Expect a short gravel section here, condition unknown. Pavement resumes before Mooseland and we’ll watch the sun come up over the Eastern Shore near Tangier on our way to breakfast at the Fairwinds Motel Restaurant in Sheet Harbour, controle #1.
Departing Sheet Harbour we head north to Upper Musquodoboit and Upper Stewiacke on our way to Brookfield for controle #2 – several options here (Brookfield Bakery, Hurricane Heidi’s Cafe, or Tim Horton’s). We then head to South Maitland and Shubenacadie, then up to The Gores on our way to controle #3 at the South Rawdon general store. We then head south toward Mount Uniacke on our way to Windsor Junction and back in the Waverley Road to Dartmouth again. Easy as that!
As this is a brevet with ample nighttime riding, a reflective vest with lots of reflective material is mandatory; as is a bright headlight AND a secondary headlight in case the first one malfunctions; and a bright steady-beam taillight AND a secondary taillight in case the first one dies. Riders without these WILL BE REFUSED THE BREVET.
Riding through the night always feels colder than it actually is; and it can actually be pretty cold, especially in low-lying inland valleys, so bring more warm clothing than you think you’ll need, including winter gloves, earband, booties, etc. Multiple layers are best of course.
Garmin devices will not survive 400km on a single charge, so it is recommended to bring a powerpack for recharging AND a copy of the printed cue sheet just in case.
If you plan to attend this brevet, please let me know via email by suppertime Thursday June 6th of your intention to participate so that I can prepare brevet cards for you.
